Elroy Air Completes Autonomous Chaparral Cargo Drone Flights In Louisiana

Elroy Air has completed a weeklong series of autonomous Chaparral cargo drone flights in Louisiana under a federal program intended to accelerate the integration of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft into U.S. airspace.

The company said the demonstrations were the first autonomous and uncrewed flights authorized through the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, or eIPP.

Elroy Air conducted the flights in Houma in late August with LIFTOff Louisiana and helicopter operator Bristow Group.

The hybrid-electric Chaparral operated without a pilot aboard and under air traffic control oversight. It transported packages, medical supplies, spare parts, food and water during the demonstrations.

Chaparral is designed to carry more than 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of cargo and travel as far as 450 miles (724 kilometers). Its vertical takeoff and landing capability allows it to operate without a conventional runway.

Elroy Air said the flights demonstrated potential commercial cargo applications across energy and industrial corridors in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi.

“Over the course of the week, Chaparral flew autonomously and with no pilot on board from one of the nation’s busiest airports for rotorcraft under air traffic control oversight,” CEO Andrew Clare said.

Data collected during the flights will help the FAA develop regulations and operating procedures for autonomous cargo aircraft in the National Airspace System.

“This demonstration with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and Elroy Air provides data to help turn these concepts from trial to deployment,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said.

The eVTOL Integration Pilot Program brings aircraft manufacturers, operators, federal regulators and state and local governments together to test advanced-air-mobility technology.

Elroy Air joined the program in March 2026 through Louisiana’s proposal. Participation does not authorize the company to begin nationwide commercial cargo operations.

The company is developing Chaparral for commercial logistics, military resupply and humanitarian missions.

Elroy Air said its prospective demand pipeline includes more than 1,400 aircraft and represents over $5 billion in potential revenue. It did not disclose how many of those commitments are binding orders.

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions is the exclusive U.S. manufacturer of Chaparral and plans to produce the aircraft at its Sacramento, California, facility. The first production aircraft is scheduled for completion in late 2026.

Elroy Air has not announced when it expects to begin commercial cargo service.
