DaRe Aviation Photography. La Force aérienne royale néerlandaise va remplacer sa flotte de Cougar par des H225M Caracal. Le ministère néerlandais de la Défense prévoit de remplacer la flotte vieillissante d'hélicoptères de transport moyen Aérospatiale AS532U2 Cougar de la Force aérienne royale néerlandaise par 14 nouveaux hélicoptères tactiques multimissions Airbus H225M Caracal. Les Cougar sont principalement utilisés en soutien aux missions des forces d'opérations spéciales (SOF) et sont exploités par l'escadron 300 de la base aérienne de Gilze-Rijen, aux Pays-Bas. Les livraisons des H225M Caracal devraient débuter en 2028, les nouveaux hélicoptères remplaçant progressivement la flotte de Cougar avant son retrait du service opérationnel prévu en 2030. Les H225M seront également basés à Gilze-Rijen, maintenant ainsi la base comme centre névralgique des capacités néerlandaises en matière d'hélicoptères de transport moyen tactiques. L'AS532U2 Cougar est entré en service au sein de l'escadron 300, surnommé les « Wildcats », en mai 1996. Dix-sept hélicoptères ont été livrés. En 2011, le ministère néerlandais de la Défense prévoyait initialement de dissoudre l'escadron 300 et de retirer le Cougar du service dans le cadre de restrictions budgétaires. Cependant, cette décision a été annulée suite à l'apparition d'un manque de capacités en matière de recherche et de sauvetage, dû au retrait des hélicoptères Agusta-Bell AB412SP de la Force aérienne royale néerlandaise et des AgustaWestland SH-14D Lynx de la Marine royale néerlandaise, ainsi qu'aux retards de livraison du NH90 de NHIndustries. Sur les dix-sept Cougar initialement livrés, douze ont repris du service. Les autres appareils ont depuis été retirés, ne conservant qu'une flotte opérationnelle de douze appareils. Les hélicoptères restants font l'objet d'une modernisation visant à les maintenir opérationnels jusqu'à leur retrait du service prévu en 2030. L'introduction du H225M marquera également un changement de rôle pour le 300e escadron. Avant le retrait du Cougar, l'escadron se transformera en une unité aérienne dédiée aux forces spéciales, renforçant ainsi la capacité des Pays-Bas à soutenir les opérations spéciales terrestres et maritimes. Le H225M Caracal fournira à l'escadron une plateforme moderne conçue pour un large éventail de missions de transport tactique et d'opérations spéciales. Royal Netherlands Air Force to Replace Cougar Fleet with H225M Caracal The Dutch Ministry of Defence plans to replace the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s ageing fleet of Aérospatiale AS532U2 Cougar medium-lift transport helicopters with 14 new Airbus H225M Caracal multi-mission tactical helicopters. The Cougars are predominantly used in support of Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions and are operated by 300 Squadron at Gilze-Rijen Air Base in the Netherlands. Deliveries of the H225M Caracal are scheduled to begin in 2028, with the new helicopters expected to gradually replace the Cougar fleet ahead of its planned retirement from operational service in 2030. The H225Ms will also be operated from Gilze-Rijen, maintaining the base as the home of the Netherlands’ tactical medium-lift helicopter capability. The AS532U2 Cougar entered Dutch service with 300 Squadron, known as the ‘Wildcats’, in May 1996. A total of 17 helicopters were delivered. In 2011, the Dutch Ministry of Defence initially planned to deactivate 300 Squadron and withdraw the Cougar from service as part of a series of defence budget cuts. However, the decision was reversed after a capability gap emerged in the search-and-rescue role following the retirement of the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s Agusta-Bell AB412SPs and the Royal Netherlands Navy’s AgustaWestland SH-14D Lynx helicopters, combined with delays to the NHIndustries NH90. Of the 17 Cougars originally delivered, 12 returned to operational service. The remaining aircraft have since been withdrawn, leaving a 12-strong operational fleet. The surviving helicopters are undergoing modernisation intended to keep them operational until their planned retirement in 2030. The introduction of the H225M will also mark a change in the role of 300 Squadron. Before the Cougar is retired, the squadron transition into a dedicated SOF air unit, strengthening the Netherlands’ ability to support special operations both on land and at sea. The H225M Caracal will provide the squadron with a modern platform designed for a wide range of tactical transport and special operations missions.
